Book Synopsis:

This book does not introduce regular clinical pictures as in a classic textbook but only describes those nutritional signs, symptoms, or syndromes that are found infrequently or not at all in  medical literatures. Although this is a collection of personal experiences, however, it provides new facts and new concepts and thereby is innovative in medicine and historic in humanity. Hopefully, it will provide information of the detrimental effect of nutritional deficiency on human body for regular readers and important clues for medical practice and basic research.

Clinical phenomena were observed 1958-1985, covering two critical periods: three years of Holocaust Nationwide Starvation, 1960-1962, and ten years of national turmoil of the Holocaust Cultural Revolution, 1966-1976, in mainland China. The major findings were observed among the inmates in a concentration camp and a small portion was observed among poor farmers in Tianjin west and physical laborers in Beijing city.

Calorie and protein deficiencies were the core problems; however, their treatment was a political affair and thereby, not included. Clinical studies had to confine only to the associated deficiencies of vitamins including thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pyridoxine, ascorbic acid, and vitamin A.  Many severe illnesses were observed and tried with parenteral thiamin or other nutrients. The dramatic responses confirmed that deficiencies of some vitamins could cause a series of diseases or symptoms beyond medical records, such as avitaminostic fevers due to deficiency of thiamin, riboflavin, or niacin. Malnutrition was also found to be one of the possible etiologic factors for some surgical disorders, such as cyst, osteolytic osteosarcoma, hernia, tenosynovits, etc.
